Quality dog smiles not miles

Today,  Buster wasn't quite the inquisitive and energetic pup he usually is. When I arrived he was still his affectionate and happy self but as we made our way out to the rainy paths,  I quickly noticed a definite change in mood and behavior. He sniffed around as usual but something was up. We ran at a slower pace for the first little bit but that was short lived as Buster made it quite clear that today was just not going to be a fast paced outing. So instead of forcing, it we had a relaxed walk around the pond. Once he realized that we had established a much more relaxed pace his mood picked up and he was back to his ways of sniffing around with ears up and nose in full function. Part of me feels guilty for not covering more ground at a faster pace but then I have come to realize that as much as DGR is about running, it is also just as much about each runner's relationship with each dog. It is our job to not only exercise and stimulate them but to also pick up on their energy and to ensure their happiness and well-being in the few hours a week we get to spend with them. So today I am enlightened with the fact that a dog's happiness is not measured in miles, but in quality doggy smiles! :) Business report: 1 soft poop, 1 runny poop and many many pees.
