DGR RUN OF THE DAY #5 ![]() DISTANCE: 9.8 km DURATION: 1 hour 2 minutes Today was my last as a sixteen year old as tomorrow is my birthday! Ella and I took off at a good pace in the beginning, but fifteen minutes in, I start having pains in my Achille's heel. We decided to disperse our run out into a few intervals of walking and running. This may have been the best for Ella’s recovery as well. Weaving our way through Upper Mount Royal, Ella was racing forward while I was being weary of ice. We saw some amazing decorations, my favourite being some human-sized nutcrackers. Ella wasn’t too interested in the decorations, instead she took a liking to a T. Rex painting and even lifting a front leg to imitate the arms. The Scoop: 1 pee. Runner: Eli

DGR RUN OF THE DAY #4 ![]() DISTANCE: 12.1 km DURATION: 1 hour 3 minutes Ella and I set off today and went on a new route. Something very interesting we saw was a care centre going around with their van and handing out masks, hand sanitizer, water and food to homeless people. It was quite heartbreaking though as the person they were helping at that time looked like an indigenous teen around my age. After that, I was fairly distracted for most of the run. Ella eventually cheered me up. She was rolling in the snow when suddenly she slipped and slid down almost the entire dog park hill. She got up and looked as if she wanted to go for a second ride. Who knew Ella was such an avid sledder? The Scoop: 1 poop and pee in the backyard. Runner: Eli DGR RUN OF THE DAY #1 ![]() DISTANCE: 8K DURATION: 1 hour Today’s run was super foggy so Buck and I decided to stick to sidewalks and higher visibility areas. It wasn’t an overall aesthetically pleasing run but either way it was nice to get outside and run together! Buck and I did run to Edworthy Park where we saw lots of other doggies! Buck kept to himself though and stayed on course. He does however, like to stop and sniff around. Buck is such a silly boy and I’m excited to see him again this week! The Scoop: 1 poop, 2 pees. Runner: Morgan DGR RUN OF THE DAY #1 ![]() DISTANCE: 11.4 km DURATION: 1 hour 5 minutes With the snow continuing to come down, Ella and I had a pretty quiet run. There were very few people out but upon passing an older lady on our run. she exclaimed “German Short-Haired Pointer!” Most of the people we saw where out widely due to visiting the memorial crosses for tomorrow’s Remembrance Day activities. We were able to get a snowy view of the city up on Crescent Heights. With each hill we went down, Ella raced ahead as I started to surf the snow due to the loss of traction. On our way back, we stopped by the art crates and one of the art pieces was done by someone I know. The Scoop: 1 pee, 1 poop in the backyard. Runner: Eli DGR RUN OF THE DAY #2 ![]() DISTANCE: 2.8 km DURATION: 45 minutes It was a frosty morning as Gibbons, Toki and I set off on an adventure. Luckily, most of the snow has melted off the paths now, just in time for Halloween! Gibbons and Toki’s neighbours have a haunted house set up and have even put signs around the neighbourhood saying “Beware of Werewolves”. Although 2020 has been an unpredictable year, holidays like Halloween make things feel a bit more normal. We girls were determined to get up to some adventure this morning and that we did! We trailed different scents and explored the green space behind the community hall. We saw many birds on our way, but no squirrels! We arrived home to drop off Gibbs but as soon as Toki saw that there was a visitor with “mom” at home, she was eager to say hello. “Mom” said we could call it on the run for today, as Toki was preoccupied with visiting. See you ladies tomorrow. Hopefully, we have another morning of nice weather! The Scoop: 8 pees for G, 3 pees for T and no poops. Runner: Jaime DGR RUN OF THE DAY #3 ![]() DISTANCE: 11.6 km DURATION: 1 hour 1 minute Today was my first run with my new running shoes. Ella helped me break them in by going fast. We also gave them a taste of various terrains: the pavement on the sidewalks and paths, the gravel/dirt trails by the golf course, the rocky beach by the river, and of course, regular old grass. They didn’t fall apart by the end, so I guess that’s a good sign. Ella enjoyed exploring the new terrain. We ran through a couple spots we’ve never been together before, and with all the stops (at crosswalks and the river) I’m surprised we still ran over 11km. Great job today girl! The Scoop: 1 poop. Runner: Ryan DGR RUN OF THE DAY #4 ![]() DISTANCE: 12.5 km DURATION: 1 hour Ella and I ran the same route as Tuesday, but just a little faster today. We took a couple stops by the water for Ella to get some water and catch our breath, but these stops were brief. We turned around a little bit before the 30 minute mark, because I knew we were going to be going up the hills at the end as fast as we came down them. As we ran back home, Ella and I approached a runner who was going pretty fast as well and running in the same direction. We increased our speed a little to pass the stranger and I’m pretty sure he started to run a little faster too. We unofficially raced for maybe half a kilometre, then I could no longer hear his footsteps behind us. When we got home, I checked to see if Ella needed to go to the bathroom on a patch of grass before heading inside. Instead of doing so, she just rolled around in the grass for a good scratch. Great job today girl! Runner: Ryan DGR RUN OF THE DAY #4 ![]() DISTANCE: 11.9 km DURATION: 59 minutes Wow, today was quick one. Ella and I practically sprinted down to the Bow River pathway, and then kept up a good pace all the way to Princess Island Park where we made a stop at the fountain. Ella took a sip and a dip from the water, while I gave my legs a rest. We crossed back over the Peace Bridge and made our way home on the other side of the river. As we were running along the path, Ella started to squat down on the pavement. “Uh oh,” I thought to myself. I immediately started pulling Ella over to the grass, but one log just slipped out of her and landed right smack dab in the middle of the path. When you gotta go, you gotta go I guess. I stood with her on the grass for a minute to see if she had any more left in her. Nope, that was it. As we ran up the hills back home, I could almost hear the sound of my feet crying in my worn out shoes. The insoles are all ripped up and so I get balls of lint flying around under my feet. It’s kinda like having a pebble in your shoe; less painful, but still annoying. Ella really helped by pulling me up the hills like a T-bar at a ski hill. Great job today Ella! The Scoop: 1 poo. Runner: Ryan DGR RUN OF THE DAY #1 ![]() DISTANCE: 11 km DURATION: 1 hour There was the slightest uphill on our way out to the Sarcee noise-barrier today, which wasn’t bad in the beginning, but after a while it seriously burned the calves. Ella was excellent as always as she helped pull me along and kept me pushing through the discomfort. We saw tons of squirrels today, which was actually a good thing because when Ella goes after them, it’s like we get a boost of nitrous like in the Fast & Furious movies. As we turned around, I was excited because the way home was predominantly a shallow decline. Great work today Ella! The Scoop; 1 poo. Runner: Ryan DGR RUN OF THE DAY #2 ![]() DISTANCE: 12 km DURATION: 1 hour 15 minutes This whole blog could be about technological failure, as my run tracking and dog walking apps didn’t want to work, but Ella and I had an awesome longer run today. We ran down to Britannia and as we were running along Riverdale Ave, Ella spotted a big Mule deer doe. It was a majestic sighting I must say. Ella didn’t bark at it like some dogs ought to, so we enjoyed a moment as we looked at it and it looked at us. We continued over to Sandy Beach, and of course, took a stop and the river. When we exited the area, I was feeling up for a challenge, so I led us up the steep hill leading into River Park. I almost lost Ella in the tall grass on the sides of the narrow trail that she buried herself in. When we got home I realized that the clip on her Halti had broken sometime during our adventure. Luckily, the leash was attached to her collar as well. Great job today Ella! The Scoop: 1 poo, 1 pee. Runner: Ryan DGR RUN OF THE DAY #4 ![]() DISTANCE: 11.7 km DURATION: 1 hour 13 minutes Welcome to the neighbourhood Ella! It is pretty wonderful that Ella lives only a few blocks away from me so I had the opportunity to help DGR Runner Ryan (my son) so he could rest his knee. I have not run Ella for some time but she is DGR's fastest doggy so I knew 10K plus was in the plans. I showed her some of my favourite areas including River Park so she could get a quick drink mid-run. She sure warmed me despite the cooler Fall weather by picking up the pace. We finished the run with a photo stop at my favourite tree. It is one of the only trees in the area with brilliant red and orange leaves. She also surprised me by doing her business on the run. This is a first! The Scoop: 1 poo, 1 pee. Runner: Ruth DGR RUN OF THE DAY #1 ![]() DISTANCE: DURATION: Ella was pulling for the first 10-15 minutes down to the river, but after that she was more mellow and we were running at a steady pace. A steady fast pace, because we were passing everyone. We made it all the way to Princess Island Park today where Ella and I chased some squirrels, and made a river stop by some geese and a duck. We made one more river stop on the way home at under the 10th Street bridge where people usually surf. Sadly, we didn’t see any surfing, but Ella took a nice dip in the water to cool off. I tracked the run on Strava as well, and it said we did 11.4km rather than just 11km. Great job today Ella!. The Scoop; nothing to report. Runner: Ryan DGR RUN OF THE DAY #4 ![]() DISTANCE: 11 km DURATION: 1 hour 9 minutes Ella and I had a great run today! She is the perfect running dog and I love taking her out. We stopped a lot again by the river so that she could drink and rest. Like always, she was perfect with people, runners, bikers, and dogs and didn’t give them a second glance. The Scoop: no business to report Runner: Abbey DGR RUN OF THE DAY #4 ![]() DISTANCE: 10.5 km DURATION: 1 hour 3 minutes As we made our way to river stop number one, Ella and I coasted along the paths with a nice and steady warm-up pace. We were already warm from the sun that hovered over the city. The breeze was nonexistent today and it was slightly humid, but we were feeling good. Ella knew exactly where she wanted to stop for our first river break. We crossed over George C. King bridge and went down to a calm section of the river. There were quite a few people at Trout Beach on the little island, but the spot we found was nice and isolated. After passing through Princess Island and turning around, we picked up the pace a little to river stop number two which was closer to Inglewood. Since we ran faster on the way back, we had more time to spend by the water. I soaked my feet in the water which I thought would be colder, but it was perfect! Ella, has a drink and just stood in the river with a satisfied look on her face. We mixed some running and walking the rest of the way home. Great job today Ella!. The Scoop: no business to report. Runner: Ryan DGR RUN OF THE DAY #8 ![]() DISTANCE: 9.1 km DURATION: 1 hour 10 minutes Sun’s out, tongues out! Wow, it was a hot one today, making Ella and I extra grateful for the easy river access, breezes, and big shady trees. We stopped several times along our run to cool off in the river. This helped us keep a decent pace albeit slow one for Ella for the rest of the way. On one of our river stops, we saw a mother duck with babies: a Hooded Merganser family. Post-run Ella enjoyed her shady backyard. The Scoop: a post-run pee. Runner: Lauren |
